Building A Franchise: Why We Need ‘The Lego Rick And Morty Movie’

LEGO Rick and Morty

Anybody who’s anybody knows who Rick and Morty are. For those who don’t know, the adventures of Rick and Morty take place throughout the multiverse, which consists of an infinite number of realities. Even though the show’s main focus is on Rick and Morty, the other major storylines include Summer (Morty’s sister), Beth (Morty’s mom) and Jerry (Morty’s dad). These characters travel to other planets and dimensions using either Rick’s portal gun or his flying car. The show was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon and airs on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block.

The fact that Rick and Morty have access to infinite timelines and realities makes it perfect for The Lego Movie treatment. The film could easily follow Rick and Morty on an adventure into a Lego dimension where they meet many of the ‘Master Builders’ like Emmet and Batman and help them save the day. The characters aren’t strangers to blocky forms either. The Season 3 finale had the characters appear in Minecraft form.

Other great aspects of the show that make it a prime candidate for The Lego Movie treatment are the various easter eggs and fourth wall breaks. The Lego Movies are known for their easter eggs. (There were too many to count in The Lego Batman Movie.) Having Rick engage with the audience in the theater and comment on how low they (Roiland and Harmon) have fallen to be making a Lego Rick and Morty film would be hilarious on many levels. In addition, Roiland and Harmon would surely sneak in some innuendo to keep the parents laughing.

The only possible issue is that all previous films in The Lego Movie franchise have been rated PG. If Warner Bros. were to greenlight The Lego Rick And Morty Movie it would be almost impossible to make it PG without upsetting fans. Since most of the show’s profanity is bleeped out, the same could be done in a movie earning it a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. Many young children go to the movies with their parents anyways, so making this change wouldn’t affect the amount of younger viewers who see the film.

LEGO Portal

The Lego Movie franchise has been going strong with The Lego Ninjago Movie released this September and The Lego Movie Sequel due to be released on February 8, 2019. Only time will tell if Warner Bros. will ever start mining more obscure series for potential Lego Movies. If they do, I hope Rick and Morty is at the top of their list.

Season 3 of Rick and Morty wrapped up this past Sunday.

Wubba Lubba Dub-Dub: Are We Getting A ‘Rick And Morty’ Christmas Special? — Fan Theory Says Yes!

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 1.26.59 PM

Season 3 of Rick and Morty finally came to an end last Sunday – or did it? A new fan theory suggests that “The Rickchurian Mortydate” will not be the final episode of Season 3. The theory suggests that a Christmas special airing sometime this winter will be the true finale to this season.

The theory stems from the stinger that played at the end of the finale where we see Mr. Poopybutthole with his new wife and son. He states that he may have a big white Santa Claus beard when Season 4 airs. This remark has fans thinking that Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon may be planning something special this holiday season. They have been known for sneaking many easter eggs into their Rick and Morty episodes.

There is some plausibility to this theory since the first episode of this season, “The Rickshank Rickdemption”, premiered on April 1, 2017, as an April Fools’ Day joke. The rest of the episodes did not begin airing until July 30, 2017. Clearly, Roiland and Harmon have no problem taking long breaks between episodes. Also, there is the fact that Christmas Eve is on a Sunday this year, which is the normal day that Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim. The big question is: what would the plot of the Christmas episode be about? Well, there are a few obvious choices and some lesser known possibilities.

Morty burying Santa

There is the possibility that the new episode could explore why Rick and Morty were burying a Santa Claus during one of Morty’s removed memories in “Morty’s Mind Blowers”. Perhaps this was just another one of Rick’s Anatomy Parks gone wrong. (Those bureaucrats will never understand Pirates of the Pancreas) Maybe we will see Tammy and Phoenix Person get revenge for the Galactic Federation being destroyed. There is also the possibility that the episode will explore if the current Beth is truly a clone. Personally, I think she is and here is a great article that further backs up my beliefs.

A final possibility is that we will get another chapter in the story of “Evil Morty”. This is what all the fans have been craving since “The Ricklantis Mixup” a.k.a. “Tales from the Citadel” aired earlier this season. When we last saw “Evil Morty” he had become President of the Citadel of Ricks and has started installing a new regime. This storyline continuing so soon may be a stretch because we typically get a new story with “Evil Morty” every other season, starting with “Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind” in Season 1. The safe bet is that we will not see this storyline continue until Season 5. That being said, Rick and Morty is a freeform anthology and Roiland and Harmon do not adhere to normal animated sitcom formulas – except maybe the “rule of three”. So, who knows if we will even get an episode this winter… and if we do, will it be a true finale to Season 3 or an early start to Season 4?

Better keep your eyes glues to Adult Swim on Christmas Eve just in case!

Rick and Morty “The Rickchurian Mortydate” Review

Screen Shot 2017-10-02 at 9.09.11 AM

Sadly, we didn’t get a conclusion to the ‘Evil Morty’ storyline like we thought. We did, however, get an interesting ending to a Good third season. “The Rickchurian Mortydate” had Rick and Morty going toe to toe with the President of the United States of America of whatever dimension they are currently residing in. Once again we get to see exactly how deadly Rick’s intelligence can be. Through some unknown means, Rick actually killed a secret service agent just by having physical contact with him. We also got a nice call-back to “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender” with the Nano-fiber defense mesh that laces Rick’s epidermis. One of the best parts of the episode was Rick’s fight with the President at the end. We thought Rick had some nice toys, but the U.S. government has some interesting weapons as well. My favorites are the twin who turn into mindless killing machines after hearing a special whistle. There was also teleporting technology similar to a stargate from the film, Stargate, and cool references to Minecraft, South Park, and the current political state of the United States. Another great part of the episode was the side story involving Beth thinking she was a clone. Honestly, I thought they were going to leave that situation alone until next season, but it was fun seeing how it played out in the season finale. Everything culminated in Rick and Morty basically hitting the reset button. The family is back together and everyone seems happy. Well everyone except Rick, but he’ll deal with it in his usual way. Considering what we learned in “Morty’s Mind Blowers” nothing that happens really matters as the show is a freeform anthology and lots of events happen in between the episodes airing. By next season Rick and Morty can be in a whole new dimension with a whole new family and we wouldn’t know it. I give “The Rickchurian Mortydate” a Good 4.5/5. I’m pretty sure that Beth is a clone and the real Beth will make an appearance next season. She did break the fourth wall and Rick has been the only person to do that so far. Hopefully, Mr. Poopybutthole was just pulling out leg and Season 4 starts in less than a year!

O, My God!: Seven Great Biblically Based Films

Evan Almighty

I once had a professor who said, “If Hollywood ever runs out of ideas all they need to do is open up the Old Testament.” My professor was right as the Old Testament is filled with many stories of early man and their interaction with a more wrathful God than seen in the New Testament. While there are many films that have been based on biblical topics, not all have hit the mark cinematically — look no further than Evan Almighty for a great example of missing the mark. Making religious films is a touchy subject as there will always be somebody who is offended by the work. Whether it be not close enough to the source material, too close to the source material, improperly cast, etc. In this article, I will discuss seven biblically based films that have either hit the mark or sparked important conversation about religion and film.

Devil Fruit Encyclopedia: What Is A “Special Paramecia”?

For all those who read One Piece, you know that Eiichiro Oda presented three distinct types of Devil Fruits that grant specific powers to their users. The Paramecia fruits are the most common and give their users superhuman abilities or traits such as generating endless amounts of wax or a rubber physique. The Zoan fruits grant the user the ability to change into an animal or animal-hybrid form. This fruit also includes the subcategories of “Ancient Zoan” and “Mythological Zoan”. The Logia fruits are considered the rarest (aside from “Mythological Zoan”) as they allow the user to transform into an element or force of nature such as light, fire, or ice. While the three fruit categories have been distinct in the past, lately they have been starting to blend. This started with the “Mythological Zoan” fruits and now continues with “Special Paramecia”.

“Mythological Zoan”

“Mythological Zoan” fruits allow the users to turn into mythological creatures. This gives them an animal transformation as well as qualities that resemble Logia and Paramecia fruit users. There are only two canon “Mythological Zoan” fruits to date, the Human-Human Fruit: Model Great Buddha which was eaten by Inspector General Sengoku and an unnamed fruit eaten by 1st Division Commander, Marco, of the Whitebeard Pirates. This gives Sengoku and Marco the ability to transform into a Buddha and a phoenix respectively. In addition to turning into animals — a human and a phoenix — they gain additional super-powers not present in normal humans and birds. Sengoku gains a solid gold body and can summon shockwaves from his palms while in Buddha form. Marco gains the ability to heal and summon blue flames while in phoenix form.

“Special Paramecia”

Mochi-Mochi Fruit

“Special Paramecia” is a new subcategory of Devil Fruit introduced in chapter 863. Originally introduced as a Logia type, the Mochi-Mochi Fruit was retconned to be “Special Paramecia” by Eiichiro Oda in One Piece: Volume 86, which covers chapters 859 – 869. The Mochi-Mochi Fruit was eaten by Charlotte Katakuri and allows him to create, control, and transform into mochi. Normal Paramecia fruit users cannot transform into or reform from the element they control. However, this is normal for a Logia types. Although the details have not been explored, it is possible that Katakuri is considered a “Special Paramecia” because mochi is not an element or force of nature, but a man-made product. Therefore, technically the fruit does not fit into the Logia category.

Other Possible “Special Paramecia” Fruits

Baby 5

So far in the series, two other devil fruits have shown the possibility to be “Special Paramecia”. These are the Egg-Egg Fruit and the Arms-Arms Fruit. The Egg-Egg Fruit was eaten by Baron Tamago and allows the user’s body composition to change into that of an egg, which if cracked open will cause the user to regenerate into a stronger body that gains additional chicken-like features each time. This gives the fruit features of a Paramecia — as the user can regenerate and evolve as well as Zoan as the user gains a chicken-like form. The Arms-Arms Fruit was eaten by Baby 5 and allows the user the ability to change their body parts or full body into weapons. This fruit has features of a Paramecia — as the user can create any type of weapon from her body and Logia as the user can reform after being totally destroyed when transformed into a missile.

Egg-Egg Fruit

Using the information presented in the manga we can conclude that there are at least two types of “Special Paramecia” fruits. The “Para-Logia” resemble Logia fruits in that they allow the user to create, control, and transform into a substance, but said substance is man-made and not an element or force of nature. The “Para-Zoan” resemble Zoan fruits in that they allow the user to gain an animal-hybrid form at will, but not a full animal form. Interestingly enough, the parazoa are a sister subkingdom of animals, literally translated as “beside the animals” and paralogia is defined as “involving self-deception”. Considering that the Egg-Egg Fruit allows the user to resemble an animal and the Mochi-Mochi Fruit deceives others into thinking the user has a Logia ability, I think the aforementioned names fit.
